Artist Talk: Chris Coleman

The Ohio State University Art and Technology department received a special guest last week, Digital and sculptural artist, Chris Coleman. Chris is a very inspirational artist, not only to myself but to many of my colleagues and anyone else who is fortunate enough to see his works. What I noticed quickly when listening to his talk is his ability to connect with those around him. This quality can be seen within his art as well.

One piece that I was deeply inspired by that Chris shared was Interstitial Zones. This piece was one of several very influential pieces that Chris shared with the department. Interstitial Zones is a piece that simplifies two light patterns into “damaging” and “helpful”. Visitors can choose to evoke one or the other by blocking or creating their own patterns using a camera flash. This ability to choose can inspire our inner destructive or constructive selves and makes it observable to others.

I personally find it fascinating when art can invoke a psychological response that reaches deep into an individual’s psyche. This piece, as well as the other ones he showed, has inspired me to travel further with my art into the deep depths of the human mind.
